Why Igbo Day matters for our children and our future

The festival is rooted in memory, but its purpose is forward-looking: language, cultural awareness, and connection across generations.

The Igbo Community in North Carolina hosts its bi-annual IGBO DAY to bring together Igbos and friends of the community across the state.

The festival aims to:

  • Foster the learning and use of the Igbo language among children.
  • Enhance cultural awareness and encourage connection among Igbo youth.
  • Create opportunities for state associations to work together.
  • Pass traditional values, food, music, and history to the next generation.

IGBO DAY is also rooted in memory. We remember the pogrom of September 29, 1966, and we honor the resilience that carried our community forward.

As one of the prominent ethnic groups in Nigeria, the Igbo community in North Carolina remains committed to upholding our rich cultural heritage while contributing fully to life in the United States.

Our guiding spirit remains: Onye aghala nwanne ya. Igwe bu ike.
